'American Idol' exclusive: Executive Producer Ken Warwick on nixing the Swaybots and helping Adam Lambert

AI: Top 12 - Page 2 Adam-lambert-idol_320

EW: The swaying people in the front rows. I noticed we’ve seen a little less of them in the last week or two. Will they continue to sway in front of the cameras?
Ken Warwick: I don’t know why we haven’t seen them. I’ll have a word with the director. But they’re swaying away like good’uns every week.

Oh no, it’s good that we see less of them. They drive our readers crazy. They’re distracting and they block the view of the actual performances. Is there any chance that the swaying people will just go away?
No chance that the swaying people will go away. However, I will have a word with the director [about what] your readers said, and get them to raise the cameras higher so [the swaying] doesn’t impede their view.

Brilliant! Okay, so how are you feeling about the show overall? There’s obviously been criticism that season 9 got off to a sleepy start. Do you think having Adam Lambert come in this week is going to shake things up and infuse the show with that added bit of drama that he generally manages to bring to the screen?
I sincerely hope so. Because the guy is an incredible talent, and he had an incredible following. And it kind of upsets me that at the moment
he’s not doing quite as well… [Pauses.] I don’t know what possessed him to do what he did at the AMAs, but he’s still struggling to live it down. And everybody says to me every week, ‘When are you gonna bring back Adam?’ They want to see him as he was. And hopefully we’re gonna do that for him this week, and we can start putting him back firmly where he belongs, as a major star. Because the guy is an incredible talent. He genuinely is. And it kind of breaks my heart to see someone with that much talent struggle a bit. So hopefully we can do back for him as he can do for us.

I think having Adam as a mentor when he was just on last season is a joke. Usually when Idol has mentors on they go on and talk about all of their accolades. What are they going to say for Adam? That he was a fan favorite that didn't win and hasn't had very good album sales? Hardly someone mentor worthy. And to try and bring Adam on to help him out is a even bigger joke when Idol did that last year for Adam and after Idol Adam went out of his way to show how he really is and it turned people off. He has nobody to blame but himself for that. He is talented but it means nothing if you don't know what to do with that talent. Perhaps Adam is the one that needs mentoring.

What a boob. The shot at Brian Dunkleman was not only uncalled for, it wasn't even remotely funny.
I knew I saw him dancing with some guy. AI: Top 12 - Page 2 447350

Seacrest Out-Of-It

In past "American Idol" seasons, viewers looked to Paula Abdul to supply the show's requisite loopy comedy and awkward moments. But now, with Paula gone, host Ryan Seacrest seems to have stepped into that buffoon role, exhibiting increasingly bizarre behavior all season long. Until this week, his oddest antics had occurred when sparring with Simon Cowell (seriously, the two of them have practically come to blows during their "witty" banter). But on Tuesday's Elvis Night episode, Ryan took his cray-cray shenanigans to a whole new level--or more specifically, a new low--thus setting the blogosphere and Twitterverse ablaze.

For instance, while Tim Urban (suddenly nicknamed "Turban" by Ryan) was performing "Can't Help Falling in Love," Ryan started slow-dancing in the aisles with a stocky male audience member, nearly throwing Tim off-track. The cameras never shot a close-up of this same-sex dancing duo, but Ryan later claimed that his partner had been Season 8 finalist Michael Sarver--a revelation that was met with a smattering of amused applause.

However, the next morning, a confused Michael Sarver tweeted that he hadn't actually attended the taping. (It turned out the beefy gentleman was a friend of contestant Lee Dewyze.) Reports from the scene later revealed that Ryan also danced a solo jig during Andrew Garcia's "Hound Dog" number and played air guitar to Lee's "A Little Less Conversation" performance on Tuesday.

Also, while interviewing guest mentor Adam Lambert--who had reassured skittish viewers, via his Twitter, that his stint on the show this week would be "beyond family-friendly"--Ryan tossed out some not-exactly-family-friendly double entendres. Most notable, and most icky, was the remark, "My tongue's not as talented as yours." Um, okay. Awkward.
But the weirdest Ryan incident had to be when he quite straightfacedly announced that next week's "Idol Gives Back" charity special would be co-hosted by his former cohort, Brian Dunkleman, who left "American Idol" after Season 1 and has since pretty much vanished into obscurity. The surprising news of Brian's return to the "Idol" stage elicited delighted gasps and cheers from the live studio audience...before Ryan revealed that he was just kidding. And no one laughed. Considering how Ryan's star has risen since he started hosting "Idol" on his own, while Brian's career has completely stalled, such a joke at Brian's expense seemed nasty and totally uncalled-for.
All this made me miss Paula's seal-clap, slurred speech, and tendencies to critique songs that have yet to be sung, aggressively promote her QVC jewelry, and draw Sharpie mustaches on her fellow judges. Paula may have been zany, but she was zany in a lovable way. She was never mean. She was always the butt of her own jokes.
What all this especially weird was that Ryan's own mother was in the audience Tuesday night, watching all of this go down. Surely she noticed her son was acting a little strange. The contestants certainly noticed. Crystal Bowersox told "We were worried about Ryan a little. He was kooky, in a sweet Ryan kind of way." (Again, in my opinion, the Dunkleman diss was NOT sweet.) Katie Stevens even confronted Ryan about his batty behavior, according to "I asked him, after dress rehearsal, 'Ryan, what is up with you?' And he goes, 'You know, I'm really, really tired right now, so I'm trying to fool myself into thinking that I'm awake.' [He was] over-caffeinated."
If that's what Ryan's like on too much caffeine, someone please keep him away from the free supply of Coca-Cola backstage from now on.

You know my initial reaction when Ryan mentioned Brian Dunkleman was what a dick once he said jk ... yeah Ryan I'm sure Brian Dunkleman loves the reminder infront of millions of viewers how your career skyrocketed when his failed. It was in bad taste and not even funny. Maybe it's something he finds funny but no one else did. And I never really thought about it but yeah I can see how all these little Ryanisms are making him look bafoonery. Let's not forget a couple of weeks ago when Aaron Kelly mentioned to Ryan how he had laryngitis and Ryan's dumbass got a whiteboard to write on when ummmm.. if anything Aaron would be the one using the whiteboard, and I think all of America was puzzled wondering what the fuck is Ryan on....

Anywhoo... as for last night's vote off I think America got it right, I wasn't sad to see either Andrew or Katie go home, it was their time.

AI: Top 12 - Page 2 PaulaAbdul0415 It’s a huge secret, but America Idol producers might be trying to woo Paula Abdul back to the struggling show. Although still immensely popular, ratings are way down this season compared to when Paula was on the panel, and executives fear the loss of even more viewers when Simon Cowell leaves after this season. “They want Paula back,” the insider says. “They’re not sure if she’d be the fifth judge, but they are talking to her. People tuned in to see Paula’s wacky antics and her chemistry with Simon. The show is just not as much fun to watch without her.”

'American Idol' Front-Runner Almost Quit

Originally posted Apr 16th 2010 1:00 AM PDT by TMZ Staff

TMZ has learned "American Idol" contestant Crystal Bowersox threw in the towel a little more than two weeks ago and was walking off the show, when Ryan Seacrest did some fast-talking and changed her mind.

AI: Top 12 - Page 2 Crystal-bowersox-ryan-seacrest-exlc-getty-credit
It went down in a parking lot after an "A.I." show. In front of several people, Crystal told Ryan she couldn't handle the competition.... she said she hated the attention and said to Seacrest, "What's the point?"

Crystal said she was going back to Ohio to be with her family, whom she missed terribly.

Ryan told Crystal that being on "Idol" was like starting a business, and if she won she'd get a recording contract and become a millionaire.

Seacrest sealed the deal by telling her, "The greatest thing I ever did was make enough money so I could buy my mom a house. You can buy your mom a house."

Seacrest out ... Crystal, not out.

Is this the best they could do? I am not a country music fan at all but does she even have enough mainstream hits? Very poor choice that it is limited to HER songs and not country music in general.

Shania Twain to be next American Idol theme and mentor

The remaining six contestants on American Idol may be feeling an additional layer of pressure next week as country superstar Shania Twain arrives to mentor them on singing her songs. The singer of hits like “Man! I Feel Like a Woman!” and “You’ve Still the One” will be working with Crystal and Lee and Siobhan and the gang on Tuesday night, before one of the six gets sent home the following evening.
Twain, the best selling country artist of all time, was last on the world stage back in January, when she carried the Olympic torch through her home town on its way to Vancouver for the 2010 winter games.
We’ll find out next week whether Shania’s mentorship of the contestants on her own songs has Idol judges telling the contestants “that don’t impress me much.”

Considering there are only 6 of them left, they shouldn't have a hard time choosing a good Shania song since she's had a lot of great HITS. She's huge in country and has appealed to more than just country music fans. I love her!

I guess so, I doubt I could name one of her "hits". The one thing that stands out to me about her is a few years ago on the CMA, the camera caught her rolling her eyes when Carrie Underwood received Female performer of the year or something along those lines and she was up against Shania. I remember reading about that. Needless to say, I won't be tuning in..lol.

You've got your female country music stars mixed up...lol
It was Faith Hill who "allegedly" rolled her eyes at Carrie Underwood winning.

I wouldn't expect you to be able to name off one of her hits if you don't even like country music much less her. To each their own.

So at the last minute VFTW switched their allegiance from Michael Lynche to Casey James. I missed both the show and the vote off (yawn) but probably would have watched it if I had known that Harry Connick Jr. was the mentor because I really like him. (Did he really call Casey a goat? lol)
So American Idol has also sent out a survey that they want the "fans" to fill out. I guess they realize that their once wildly popular show is tanking it and they want to hear from the fans. Anyone insterested in blasting them and telling it like it is, here is the link. http://www.americanidol.com/news/view/pid/3087/?ref=socialmedia_2010_05_04_IdolSurvey2010
Its kind of long but check it out, they seem to hit on what we bitch about regarding the show so at the very least, they are paying attention.

I just read that Aaron Kelly went home filing nails

I'm not sure the show can survive without Simon but it appears that they are starting to listen to the fans and take steps in the right direction. Check the bolded paragraphs where they talk about shortening the results shows to 30 minutes. Its about time but is it too little too late?? I just don't see anyone filling Simons shoes...they better pick someone good. I still say Piers Morgan is the only one who could pull it off or maybe Harry Connick Jr. lol, he seemed to get rave reviews for his appearance on Idol...sorry I missed it. I seriously think the 4 judge format killed this show though...too much BS talking, not enough singing and WAY WAY too much Ryan Seacrest.

Upfronts: Fox Faces ‘Idol’ Without Simon

By BRIAN STELTERAI: Top 12 - Page 2 BlogSmallInlineSimon Cowell.
AI: Top 12 - Page 2 Upfronts75

Fox says the search for Simon Cowell’s replacement on “American Idol” will happen in earnest this summer.
The network was asked about the health of its “Idol” franchise on a conference call with reporters ahead of its new season presentation to advertisers on Monday.
The network is grappling with the departure later this month of the acerbic judge Simon Cowell — the man credited by many with making “Idol” into the No. 1 reality show on television. He is leaving to prepare a new show, “X Factor,” for Fox’s fall 2011 schedule.
Peter Rice, the chairman of entertainment for the Fox Networks Group, said Monday that “we have to find a judge to replace Simon that provides both music credibility and incredible entertainment value.”
The “Idol” masterminds will focus on finding a new judge this summer. “We’ll work hard during the summer with the producers to come up with a good show for next year,” he said.
Mr. Rice acknowledged that the ratings for “Idol,” the nation’s No. 1 entertainment show, have declined about 9 percent this season.
“We think in comparison with other TV shows, that’s actually pretty good,” he said. (He’s right.)
He sounded optimistic about “Idol” without Simon, noting that “it’s a format that works around the world,” and adding, “the wonderful thing about the show is that we get a new cast every year,” in the form of new contestants.
Meanwhile, another question looms over “Idol:” can it get better by getting shorter?
That’s what Fox says the fans want, and what it plans to deliver next
year. In the network’s midseason schedule, the Tuesday performance shows will remain 90 minutes long, but the Wednesday results shows will shrink to 30 minutes, down from 60 minutes this season.

Fox has tried 30-minute results episodes in past seasons, but they have tended to balloon into 60-minute episodes when Fox needed to fill time slots vacated by flailing new shows.
Kevin Reilly, Fox’s entertainment president, said: “We’ve heard consistently from audiences they would like more performances and tighter results shows, so that’s what we’re going to do as we get into the spring.”

I think if Idol had another weak season like this season as far as contestants go minus Simon next year, I can't imagine Idol being the powerhouse it has been. Let's face it Simon drives the contestants and the audience.

I agree Lorraine probably Piers is the only one who could come close to filling his shoes but I'm not a big Piers fan, so it's not enough to get me to tune in.

yup, sadly that is true as even Simon can't get me to tune in this year. I like watching the performances but simply cannot take 90 seconds of singing followed by 4 judges comments. It drives me nuts! lol

btw, I got this from VFTW. I guess this week is judges choice where they pick the song for the contestant and this is what they are saying the final 3 will perform.

Casey James got "Daughters" by John Mayer, selected by Kara and Randy. It's a piece of shit terrible song and it'll make sure Casey gets no new voters, so we'll have to vote extra hard.

Lee DeWyze got "Hallelujah" by Leonard Cohen, selected by Simon. Can we fucking kill this song already? It's so overdone on Idol and it's obnoxious. So it's a perfect fit for Lee. Since Simon owns the rights to the song, he'll run it into the ground.

Crystal Bowersox got "Maybe I'm Amazed" by Paul McCartney, selected by Ellen. Not a bad song choice at all. The judges will probably praise her and say it's one of her best performances.

WHY WHY would they pick that boring ass song for Casey??? I guess they want to MAKE SURE that Lee and Crystal are final 2. Agree about Hallelujah...OVERKILL!
